In order to have a picture that is not too light or not too dark, you need to have all of those different settings. The goal is to control light. The aperture/F-stop does it with the amount of light it lets in...the shutter speed works with the aperture in figuring out the right amount. Keep experimenting, but be sure to take pics in auto mode, too, until you conquer concepts.
